Bone loss and Hand Osteoarthritis
GENERAL BONE LOSS IN PATIENTS WITH EROSIVE AND NON-EROSIVE HAND OSTEOARTHRITIS DURING THREE YEARS.
Abstract: OP0064
Authors: O. Ruzickova et al.
Key content:
In this prospective observational study 144 patients (15 males) with hand osteoarthritis (hand OA) were followed during 3 years with regard to bone density measured with DXA. Patients with erosive hand OA (defined by at least one erosive interphalangeal joint) had significant lower T-scores of the lumbar spine, total femur and femur neck at baseline. After three years, the decrease in T- score of lumbar spine and total femur was significantly higher in erosive hand OA compare to non-erosive disease.
Relevance:
The explanation for this finding could be some metabolic factors in hand OA or that patients with erosive hand OA could have more severe form of OA also in other joints (knee, hip, spine) with reduced mobility resulting in lower bone density.
